Arts Integration Transforms! How Arts Integration Across A School Can Truly Impact Student Achievement & School Climate
Tuesday July 30, 2024 11:30am - 12:15pm CDT
This presentation will highlight the transformative effect that arts-integration is having in Arkansas schools. Presenters will discuss the impact by offering an interactive presentation that relays their experiences working with school leaders and educators. Resources and contacts will also be provided for school administrators that would like more information about transforming their school through arts integration.

Implementing Arts Integration across an entire school is beneficial now more than ever. As more and more schools are embracing new schedules (double blocking, four-day weeks) and are attempting to recapture the momentum that they had pre-pandemic, the introduction of art-based strategies becomes more and more important and leads to happier, more engaged students; strong student achievement; fewer discipline issues; and positive school climate for teachers and students.

A 2014 research study provides insight into the impact of arts-integration methods*. The study focused specifically on the long-term retention of academic content. The study shows that retention was significantly better for the group of students who performed at lower levels of reading achievement and were taught through arts-integration based methods than those who were given conventional instruction. These results suggest that arts-integrated methods of instruction can help level the playing field for students by providing them with non-traditional ways to receive knowledge and demonstrate understanding. (*Mariale Hardiman, Luke Rinne and Julia Yarmolinskaya, “The Effects of Arts Integration on Long-Term Retention of Content and Student Engagement,” Mind, Brain and Education 8, no. 3 (2014): 144-148.)

Integration of the NEW Community Service Requirements
Tuesday July 30, 2024 11:30am - 12:15pm CDT
The integration of the new Arkansas public school community service hours requirement for students into the school day in rural schools with limited opportunities for community service is a strategic effort to ensure that learners in these areas can fulfill their service obligations. Despite the scarcity of local service options, Manila High School is creatively incorporating community service activities into the daily schedule to provide students with valuable experiences that contribute to their personal growth and civic engagement. This innovative approach not only addresses the logistical challenges of limited community service locations but also underscores the importance of instilling a culture of service and responsibility among students in rural communities.

Tuesday July 30, 2024 12:20pm - 1:05pm CDT
Upon the submission of a bullying report, Act 1029 of 2019 clearly lays out the appropriate steps administrators are to follow. By use of an electronic bullying report that can be made public on the district website and a variety of other ways, individuals may report (anonymously, if they wish) what they believe to be a credible bullying report. At that point, Act 1029 makes it easy to understand what to do, and an administrative Google Form leads to a seamless process in terms of record-keeping of reports, investigations, and actions. This presentation illustrates this process and makes all forms of data disaggregation readily available.

Integration of the NEW Community Service Requirements (Repeat)
Tuesday July 30, 2024 12:20pm - 1:05pm CDT
The integration of the new Arkansas public school community service hours requirement for students into the school day in rural schools with limited opportunities for community service is a strategic effort to ensure that learners in these areas can fulfill their service obligations. Despite the scarcity of local service options, Manila High School is creatively incorporating community service activities into the daily schedule to provide students with valuable experiences that contribute to their personal growth and civic engagement. This innovative approach not only addresses the logistical challenges of limited community service locations but also underscores the importance of instilling a culture of service and responsibility among students in rural communities.

Join us as we share how Palestine-Wheatley leaders planned, organized, and structured the master schedule to meet the needs of students, staff, and therapists within the elementary, maximizing their time with limited staff. It took strategic planning from both the SPED Director and building-level principal. We discovered openings in the schedule and places where instructional time could have been maximized further. It has been challenging, but it has been so worth it! ALL of OUR kids have grown through this process, and we are so grateful for the work that our team has put in. Transforming Leadership to Increase Literacy for All Students
Tuesday July 30, 2024 1:20pm - 2:20pm CDT
Literacy instruction requires all stakeholders to have a deep understanding of scientifically based literacy research and the critical subsystems that support it. Without knowledgeable administrators, informed instructional leaders, collaborative teams, and other educators cannot sustain high-quality literacy instruction. There must be district and state guidance, funding, and professional development supports that are aligned to the research, with systems and structures designed to continue the effort. Without a change in educator preparation, state policy, programming, and accountability for school improvement, growth in literacy outcomes for students is extremely difficult. Knowledgeable educational leadership must guide the change. 2 lexialearning.com

This presentation will demonstrate how LETRS for Administrators supports and informs administrators and school leadership about LETRS (Language Essentials for Teachers of Reading and Spelling), the gold standard of professional development for educators. A step-by-step blueprint with numerous tools to guide the journey of implementing the science of reading (SOR) is integrated throughout the course.

The course defines the systems and infrastructures required to successfully implement a literacy initiative aligned to scientifically based research. Built from the research in implementation science and sustainability, school improvement, and shared leadership, the course provides numerous tools—including an analysis of the current systems required for improved literacy outcomes—for guiding an implementation through various stages.

Transforming Leadership to Increase Literacy for All Students (Repeat)
Tuesday July 30, 2024 2:50pm - 3:50pm CDT

Knowledge comes to us in many ways: from simply observing the world around us, to solving complex problems, to seeing beyond ourselves and understanding others. Knowledge isn’t one-dimensional or one-size-fits-all; it’s dynamic and nuanced.

This session provides a flight path to understanding these subtleties through almost 130 years of extensive partnerships with more than 40,000 schools in more than 90 countries across the globe, offering a range of services that evaluate education through a lens of continuous improvement: from its impact on the individual, to the effectiveness of the institution, to a broad view of the large system. Seeing all sides of the story means you can really understand your full landscape—and what it will take to drive improvement.

Wynning Through Adversity
Wednesday July 31, 2024 9:30am - 10:30am CDT
In the last three years at Wynne High School, we have worked to develop a Culture of Success for students and teachers. Our entire world was rocked by an EF3 Tornado on March 31, 2023, that destroyed the town and left our school in ruins. We had to shift our focus to recovery, creating a plan to finish the school year while also planning for this year and, at the same time, striving to continue to be successful. Through the hard work and dedication of our staff, administration, students, and support staff, we not only finished the 2022-23 school year without missing any activities, but we also saw gains despite all the obstacles. We started the 2023-24 school year on two campuses and moved into our new temporary campus during the week before Labor Day, where we continued to see a thriving culture and gains. We will share our story as a story of hope and how this would have been impossible without a strong culture, supportive parents, passionate teachers, and strong-willed students who all have pride in Wynne High School. Participants will discover how Wynne School District triumphed over adversity and learn from our experiences.
